Meet "Shel".

Shel is a quite rare 1976 Ford Mustang II "Cobra".

Our client has owned her since new! Shel received a complete body and paint job several years ago.

The interior lights were staying on and draining the battery. We were able to determine that the rear hatchback switch was faulty and was keeping the interior lights on, even with the doors shut. We will be ordering a new latch switch.

We performed both a wet and dry compression test on the engine, and it is quite strong. Our client originally thought about upgrading the "detuned" factory powertrain to have more power, and make it more fun to drive. Our client wants Shel to be a "Sleeper". We will be performing a large amount of detail work, and many upgrades to the front & rear suspension, complete driveline, and new fuel and brake lines.

We were able to locate a strong 302 V8 motor that was recently rebuilt and had many performance upgrades added (such as a mild cam, upgraded intake, aluminum heads, roller rockers and more).

It was quite dirty and had several small oil leaks. We partially dissassembled the motor and replaced the oil pan, installed new gaskets and seals, degreased and painted the motor the correct "Ford Dark Blue".

The original waterpump was also replaced. We dressed the engine up with custom ordered "Cobra" aluminum valve covers and air cleaner. The engine also received upgraded timing chain and gears, new front timing chain cover and seal along with upgraded high heat polished ceramic headers.

The transmission was leaking in several areas. We replaced the seals and gaskets. With the extra torque from the new engine Shel's C4 transmission received an upgraded B&S shift kit. The transmission was degreased and repainted to look like new again.

Shel also received many suspension and steering upgrades. The front steering rack assembly was replaced, along with all new tie rod ends, stabilizer bar bushings along with front suspension bushings and new front shocks.

The rear driveline assembly was removed, degreased and painted to also look like new again. The standard rear diff gears were upgraded and posi traction was added. The original leaf springs were badly rusted and cracked, they were replaced with brand new heavy duty custom ordered springs, along with new shackles, new hardware, new bushings and new sway bar bushings. New rear shocks were also installed.

The complete undercarriage had a thick layer of undercoating that was removed. The complete underside of the car received a coat of primer, two coats of commercial grade rocker guard and a finish coat of factory correct white paint.

Shel's engine bay area was also degreased, cleaned, sanded, primed and painted the correct white high gloss finish before the refreshed engine and transmission were reinstalled.

Once the engine and transmission were installed, the motor received an upgraded serpentine belt system with billet aluminum pulleys and an upgraded four core aluminum radiator with an upgraded electric fan. The high polished ceramic coated headers look fantastic!

We degreased the gas tank, sanded primed and painted the fuel tank to look like new again. The fuel tank straps were also repainted.

Our attention turned to a complete custom exhaust system next. Our client wanted the car to look as stock as possible, but wanted an increased "Fun Factor" making it handle and accelerate much better than it did when it was new.

We installed an "X" style front pipe at the headers to improve exhaust flow and keep the interior floor area as quite as possible. We fabricated special pipes to keep it a true dual exhaust, going over the axle and both pipes attached to a special internal "X" Flow Magnaflow performance muffler.

We installed two downward facing tailpipes which look like the original exhaust system. We made a heat shield for the muffler to keep it safe in the area of the fuel tank.

All of the welds were ground smooth, and a special high heat manifold paint was applied to the complete exhaust system.

It turned out great! Sounds great too! Here is a short YouTube video on what Shel sounds like now...
